HUAWEI SMART PV SOLUTION CONTRIBUTES TO SUCCESSFUL NETWORK CONNECTION OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST SOLAR CELL SYSTEM

On September 26, the Chinese state-owned tool Huanghe Hydropower Development (hereinafter referred to as Huanghe Hydropower) successfully connected the 2.2 GW PV plant to the power grid in Hainan Prefecture, northwestern China’s Qinghai province. This is the world’s first ultra – high voltage power line that delivers 100% renewable energy over long distances and also the world’s largest project for renewable energy with a short construction time.

This milestone project has reached the highest level in the industry in terms of device selection, design standards and technologies, making the record for the largest solar cell project in the world.

The grid-connected 2.2 GW PV plant is located in Qinghai Province at an average altitude of over 3,000 m. It is built in five phases and consists of 672 PV matrices with over 7 million PV modules. Three 330 kV booster stations were constructed and string converters were installed.

This milestone project has reached the highest level in the industry in terms of unit selection, design standards and technology, making the record for the largest PV project in a single location in the world.

– Huawei – the supplier with the largest project share – provides 1.6 GW inverters for this project. As the world’s first ultra – high voltage line to supply 100% renewable energy over long distances, the project requires high voltage inverters (HVRT) to ensure the safety and stability of the power grid. Because they are the first to meet GB / T 37408-2019 Technical Requirements for Solar Conductive Power Inverters, Huawei’s smart string inverters support short circuit ratio (SCR) as low as 1.5, without reducing the current during HVRT. It can also be connected to weak networks and offers malfunctioning capacity, which guarantees stable operation in different network environments.

In addition to advanced inverters, this project also benefits from several intelligent technologies, such as MBUS power carriers, Smart IV Curve Diagnosis 4.0, smart electro-luminescence (EL) detection, integrated application of trackers, bifacial PV modules and smart inverters and smart solar cell management. These significantly optimize O&M efficiency, facilitate accurate error forecasting and minimize the leveled cost of electricity (LCOE). Through joint innovation, Huanghe Hydropower and Huawei developed the industry-leading smart I-V diagnostic technology for global PV O&M, which has been widely adopted worldwide.

Huanghe Hydropower and Huawei together are leading the introduction of intelligent technologies for solar cells. This and several other joint projects have had a significant impact on the stable development and technological development of the global solar cell industry.

SMART PV: BREATHING LIFE INTO A DESERT LANDSCAPE

Huawei’s Smart PV (solar cell solution) uses digital technology to convert solar energy into electricity ultra-efficiently, promoting the introduction of clean energy and create a more sustainable world.

Includes clean energy

In October 2018, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a special report on the effects of global warming at 1.5 ° C above pre-industrial levels. The report pointed out that, in contrast to an increase of 2 ° C, limiting global warming to 1.5 ° would not only have clear benefits for humans and natural ecosystems but also culminate in a sustainable and fairer society. The report also emphasized that in order to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C, it is necessary to achieve “rapid and far-reaching” transformations in land, energy, industry and cities. By 2030, global anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions must be reduced by about 45 percent compared to 2010 levels and “net-zero” emissions must be achieved by 2050. Increased use of clean energy, which increases resource utilization and to develop a greener energy infrastructure is fundamental to being able to respond to the energy crisis and climate change.

Transforming crisis into opportunity

Both Huawei and Baofeng Group took a proactive approach to dealing with problems such as energy shortages, pollution and environmental degradation. With a belief in the power of technology, both partners respond to the global call for clean and efficient energy systems with practical action.

Historically, the Binhe New District on the east bank of the Yellow River in Ningxia forms a tough ecosystem with vast deserts.

In 2014, the Baofeng Group began managing 107 square kilometers of desert land by planting alfalfa to improve the soil. The company then began planting goji berries, a company that stretches back 1,000 years in Ningxia. The revival of Goji farming has also revived an otherwise deadly expansion of the desert.

To take full advantage of the land resources that nature provides, Huawei Smart PV supported Baofeng Group in building a solar power system over the Goji plantation and in fact draped a green blanket over the ground.

Goji farming and smart PV technology have been integrated in perfect harmony and created a rich layer of “edible rubies” topped by a pristine blue sea of solar cells. It represents a new model of mixed land use that involves two complementary industries: agriculture and solar cells – a model that leads the transformation of goji farming and new energy in the Ningxia region.

Under the sun, a desert becomes an oasis.

The planned 1 GWp solar energy system covers a total area of 20 square kilometers. The 640 MW PV power plants that have already been built are connected to the electricity grid, which creates the world’s largest PV power plant with smart tracking. Huawei’s smart PV solution uses world-leading, horizontal uniaxial automatic tracking technology, which allows solar panels to track the sun like sunflowers, which in turn improves power generation compared to traditional photovoltaic systems.

The story so far in statistics

The solar power plant can effectively reduce evaporation of soil moisture by 30% ~ 40%. Vegetation coverage is increased by 85%, which significantly improves the regional climate. Baofeng PV Park has generated 3.875 billion kWh of electricity (* since connected to the electricity grid until 31 July 2020), which reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 1.841 billion kg, which is equivalent to planting 80 million trees.

Expected CO2 reductions per year

When the project is completed, it will save 557,600 tonnes of carbon, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.695 million tonnes, sulfur dioxide (SO2) by 51,000 tonnes, nitrogen oxide (NOx) by 26,000 tonnes and dust by 462,000 tonnes each year. This will increase the annual environmental capacity by approximately 2.23 million tonnes for the future growth of the energy sector in Ningxia.

Although the sun is still setting on this land, the once barren, endless desert has slowly turned into an economic blue sea that represents the future and hope – all thanks to time and advances in technology.

Huawei and Baofeng are leading the transformation of goji farming and new energy into Ningxia, accelerating the development of new technologies, industries, companies and models. This new agricultural + solar cell model, several land use models not only gives new life to Ningxia, but creates a new ecosystem where humans and nature coexist harmoniously and give an extra shade of green to the world.

“When I first came here, my original vision was to help change the environment. I did not expect the goji-PV project to do that and also benefit farmers in the area. ”

– Baofeng Farm-anställd

“The country used to be barren, but because we planted goji berries and solar cells, we have work all year round and our lives are much better than before.”

—Ningxia bybor

To run the world with sunlight

Huawei’s Smart PV solution uses technology to cover the desert with greenery and breathe new life into Ningxia. Huawei and Baofeng will continue to use the new agricultural model + PV to generate clean energy and improve the climate in the desert regions. Huawei looks forward to collaborating with more partners globally and taking an active role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and moving towards renewable energy to help humanity on its way to resource-saving, environmentally friendly and carbon-efficient sustainable development. We will continue to harness the power of technology to develop new methods in response to global climate change and to protect the earth, our home.

JETION SOLAR COMPLETES THE WORLD’S LARGEST LARGE-SCALE SOLAR STORAGE PROJECT IN TIBET

One of the largest solar storage projects in China has been completed, with CNBM New Energy Engineering connected to Jetion Solar, which will complete the construction work for the project and meet COD at the end of September 2020.

The project is a behemoth that clocks in at 40 MW of solar and 193 MWh of energy storage. It would be remarkable even if it were just a storage installation, as it is larger than any such project currently in operation. The project is located in Gangba County, Xigaze, Tibet, with an altitude of over 4700 meters and more than 3200 hours of sunlight each year. The world’s world-leading solar storage project was invested by the Chinese company Dynavolt and EPC was provided by Jetion Solar.

Based on the characteristics of the local electricity load and the special nature of the Tibet electricity grid, the project was designed as a complete energy storage project, the solar matrices will charge the storage during the day and the storage will power the grid completely during the night. The storage system uses lithium iron phosphate batteries with a capacity of 193 MWh. To date, it is one of the world’s highest altitude projects and the largest installed capacity projects for solar storage.

It is expected that electricity production will be approximately 72,000 MWh per year, which corresponds to saving 26,200 tonnes of standard coal, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 7,900 tonnes and reducing sulfur dioxide emissions by 2,400 tonnes. Thanks to its high-capacity energy storage system, the project can be used as a stable power source to provide electricity at night and provide clean and reliable green energy to communities in Xigaze, which has an important demonstration role for peak shaving, frequency modulation and transmission of the Tibetan network. At the same time, this project will also make a positive contribution to Xigaze’s industrial development, taxation, labor employment and targeted poverty reduction and promote the development of Xigaze’s surrounding industries such as agriculture and mining.

“The success of network connection of this project further strengthens our confidence in the development of solar storage.” said Sun Jie, head of Jetion Solar. “Tibet is one of the regions with the richest solar energy resources in the world. Jetion Solar will continue to expand its EPC operations so that clean energy will benefit more communities on the plateau and also contribute to the development of Tibet in a high-quality way.
